"After trying out surucci on the main road, we decided to give Red Fort a go. I'm glad we did. The food was perfect, maybe a bit too much, but all the same, spot on. Service, and price, and surroundings were also top class. If you're looking here for indian food, I highly reccomend Red Fort. Looks like a very good lunch deal too, 3 courses and a drink for £6, and also 10% student discount. I will be back, hopefully soon."

"Food was very good and very reasonable."
"Unfortunately it was all a bit chaotic..."
"I repeat the food was good and had it not been for the waiting, would no doubt be going back again."

"I had past the Red Fort many times but hadn’t actually been in until the other week… i was very pleasantly surprised! The lunch was great, they have a very good selection of food on offer for the buffet and at £6 (student price) for all you can eat plus a soft drink and either ice cream or tea/coffee its really good value. The korma was nice (not as good as Noor though!) i thought the best dish was probably the Chicken Chasni. i’ll be back."

"I went there for the first time recently with some work colleagues as the restaurant we had originally aimed for was closed. What a great decision! The Red Fort is a compact little restaurant with space for probably around 40 covers. As we went at lunch time we were able to take advantage of their fantastically-priced buffet lunch which, at just under £7 per person for all you can eat, a soft drink and a tea/coffee or ice cream, is wonderful value. Although the choice of dishes is limited they were all delicious and several of us went back for seconds and thirds. We asked for some nan bread as it had run out and the staff brought some to our table, which was a lovely touch. Altogether a great find, and somewhere I hope to go again soon!"

"The lunch buffet has amazing food. For under ten pounds it’s good value too. What I specially like about it is that it doesn’t have an overwhelmingly large selection of food but everything is absolutely delicious."

"Only ever been here for the buffet lunch which is absolutely awesome value. Doesn’t have a big selection but enough to keep most people happy and the food is very good. Its very reasonably priced too and offers a good student discount. Great place to fill up for lunch if your in the area."

"The food here is consistantly good and the staff are always friendly. It’s nice and central too, about ten minutes walk from Princes Street. The best deal is the £6 lunch buffet, which has a wide variety and includes a welcome drink. mmmm."

"The best value Indian buffet we've ever had. Fantastic food, friendly staff, lovely decor and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Brilliant."
The ViewEdinburgh Review
Review by Andy Hayes – 11 November 2008.
Red Fort is Edinburgh’s cheap and cheerful Indian alternative, offering straightforward dishes in a clean, comfortable environment.
The Venue
Without a doubt the boldest feature on Drummond Street, the bright red facade of Red Fort can easily be seen from the busy intersection nearby. The exterior of the building is nice and simple, which reflects both the decorating tastes and menu that can be found inside.
The Atmosphere
Regardless of the time of the day, Red Fort feels like a gathering place for friends, old and new. Because of the great value for money, many students from the neighbouring university can be found here. Others pop in to enjoy the pre-theatre menu, before heading over to the Festival Theatre, a block away. The bright red theme from outside is continued inside; combined with lots of stainless steel and creamy white walls, the dining room feels calm and peaceful despite the busy traffic of diners arriving and departing.
The Food
The three-course pre-theatre menu for £9.55 is great value for money. It includes a vegetable pakora or chicken tikka starter, a choice of different curries, bhunas, jalfraize etc, accompanied by rice or naan, all followed by a scoop of ice cream and a hot drink. While the pakora is a bit greasy, the curries are packed with flavour without being too hot. You might want to try the bhuna, which tastes of freshly picked tomatoes and onions straight from the garden and boasts rich hints of spice, such as thyme or coriander. The curry sauce is not overly thick and is perfect for both the rice and the naan. The staff seem more than happy to accommodate patrons and may even allow you to order curries off the main menu as part of the pre-theatre menu, if requested.
On the main menu, a favourite is the lamb pasanda (£6.95). A hearty, marinated lamb soaks up the hot curry sauce, flavoured with elements of almonds and chestnuts.
The Drink
A full bar is available, including cocktails, liqueurs, beer and wine. Red Fort actually makes a great cup of tea – with a splash of milk, it is a nice way to finish your meal.
The Last Word
Cheap and cheerful really does describe the friendly atmosphere and the appetizing tastes found here in the Old Town. Red Fort is a great stop for lunch, just before the theatre, or to enjoy a good meal in the company of old friends.
